The Burke Brothers
Thesis Statement: The Burke brothers, Peter, Brendan and Sammy, are learning to be independent while dealing with the challenges of being on the autism spectrum.
For this edit, initially I was not given much information about the story, only a summary of a sentence or two. So I did not quite understand what I was looking for, but knew that the theme of independence was a big part of the story. As I went through the images making my initial edit, I could tell the photos were more complex than what the surface was telling me, so I asked the photographer to send over his detailed proposal. Along with the proposal, he sent me a draft of the book he is creating for his senior capstone. After going through the draft and leaving comments and suggestions for the photographer, I decided to try again at my edit now that I had more information and some caption context. I found it difficult to edit for three main story participants because each person has their own hobbies and interests and obstacles they have to overcome. I ended up sequencing the photos in the sense of how a day could be played out. Starting with an afternoon and ending with the following evening. There were so many things the boys participated in, this sequence made the most sense to me.
